Sunday

WHY is it so COLD outside??? My dashboard says it's 13 degrees right now. Don't they know it's not October yet? I saw people out in leather jackets, hats and even gloves today. It is WAY too early for this kind of ridiculousness! It had better warm up in the days to come.
I had a lovely brunch at the Senator this morning with the C. sisters. I loved transporting to another time in the charming resto. Also, I had not had a chance to go for brunch in months, so it was extra good! Plus because it was so COLD, it was nice to huddle indoors in a cozy booth and fill ourselves with good eats.

Then we wandered over the the Live Green Toronto Festival all along the side of the Eaton Centre and in Dundas Square. There were lots of great eco-friendly vendors. I picked up a couple water bottles. The glass bottle is pretty smart. It's called Tap Water Bottle and has a cute blurb on it. My Mom and Aunt L. were looking for small glass bottles as they are weary of the metal and plastic ones. I'll see who gets it in the end... Chose the smaller of two sizes as the ladies like the smaller bottles to reduce weight. Hope they don't read this! There's lots of info on the virtues of tap water on their website. The blue one was a freebie from the City of Toronto Environment Office! How nice! It says fill with Toronto's quality tap water.
I also picked up this re-usable lunch bag. They let me decorate it even though it was a kids activity area. I plan on passing it along to a kid. Drew a funny drawing of a smiling piece of bread with blueberry eyes on the flip-side.

The Festival was great -- lots of info on green or sustainable food/fashion/housewares/etc. and live music too. I'll have to remember to check it out again next year!

Peridots at the end of August

August is quickly coming to and end! I can't believe how quickly the Summer months have flown by. Here are a couple MoonRox items in the tone of the birthstone of August, the peridot. Both of these are part of the Classic MoonRox Series.
This is the Orbit Ring. The Orbit Ring has been the most popular MoonRox style over the years. To buy this ring or to see other colours, view the listing in the MoonRox Etsy Shop.
This is the Galaxy Ring. It's a big ring to make a big statement! To buy the Galaxy Ring or check out other colours, view the listing in the Shop.

Both styles are hand-wired with glass beads to your size.

Have a great weekend everybody!

Super

I am lovin' my RetroSuperFuture sunglasses. It was the amazing Zeiss sunlenses that sold me. They make the world look so much better! I have barely worn any of my many other pairs of sunglasses since getting my crystal clear pair last Summer. Now Super has collaborated with Liberty & Co. in a limited edition series. I have always enjoyed Liberty prints. I have a few pieces of fabric that I picked up at the shop years ago when my sister did her masters in London. I have not had the heart to cut into them quite yet. Need to think of a good project! Anyhow, I love the print that is emblazoned on these frames. Now I just need to justify yet another pair of shades...

Let's go to the Ex, oh baby....

A. and I went to the Ex tonight... 'twas a lovely evening to stroll the grounds. We ate pierogies, jerk chicken, she got her fortune told, checked out all the pavilions and soaked up the sights and sounds of the annual end of Summer fair.
In the Arts and Crafts building we saw lots of familiar vendors including Hides in Hand. I have amassed several pairs of their amazing mocs over the years, so it is safe to say I have an addiction. I've got the traditional moc, the ankle moc, the ankle moc with sole, the ballet slipper and one of the best trapper hats ever. I always say it's like heaven on my head. I'm scoping out the mocs above with the rubber sole for my next pair. Apparently one can never have enough moccasins! They are super comfy and made here in Ontario.

Check out this sculpture of Yoda! It's made of butter... Yep, butter...

We got to pet a super cute and outrageously soft alpaca. Now I want one! Look at it's smile!

And there went the evening. It's always great to go back to the Ex and reminisce about being a wee tot riding the bumper cars, eating cotton candy and sitting on my dad's shoulders clutching a large stuffed Pac-Man that probably was very hard-won. Fun!

Storms, tornadoes and rainbows

It was a bizarre storm we had last night. One of many crazy storms we have had of late. This time I was surprised to see that tornadoes actually hit here in Southern Ontario. It was like watching a film through the window as I listened to the storm watch coverage. Colours and light reflected the weather which changed from clear to grey. A huge bunch of colourful helium balloons escaped into the sky... I didn't get my camera out in time. Then it turned from wildly torrential, to bright and yellow, then a rainbow appeared scooping across the CN Tower and then it was clear and normal again. All within minutes. I'm saddened to hear of the tornado damage and the death of an 11 year old boy. Am listening to McGuinty discuss the damage right now.

Blackout anniversary

On Friday, A. and I went by Ossington to check out the festivities to mark the anniversary of the big blackout. People were taking back the streets like is was 2003.

When the black out happened, I was working my day at Fresh Collective (a Toronto designer collective/shop) with fellow designer C. We thought we had blown a fuse. Looked around the street and figured things out pretty quickly and then closed up shop and began to trek home with the bewildered and wandering masses. Ran into half of the Foxy duo and another friend and the three of us planted ourselves on a patio for a bevvy.

Puke and Cry

On Thursday I went to check out "Puke and Cry," CoCo's show at Paul Petro Special Projects Space. The reception was lovely. There was no actual puking or crying... Here are a few images.

Artist's Walk

I recently visited Artist's Walk at Village Square in Burlington for the fist time. I sent off a bunch of MoonRox a few months back, but did not have a chance to actually see the shop and meet the nice people until now. They had everything nicely displayed in a lovely cabinet in the centre if the shop.

Artist's Walk showcases a variety of work by a roster of Canadian artists. These include art, photography, jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles, greeting cards, toys and bookworks. I recognized notebooks and cards by Smitten Kitten, belt buckles and brooches by BBJ, pendants by 2 Mile Designs, light switch plates by Vintage Love, and paintings by my recent One of a Kind Show neighbour Michelle Rose

The shop is located in the centre of Village Square. The Village is comprised of a combination of heritage homes and replicas of century old buildings built using reclaimed brick. It's quite charming! Go by and check it out if you get a chance! You'll find lots of MoonRox lovelies!

The Mode Show ended on Tuesday, but here are a few more photos. Above is a shot of a group of Token Necklaces that I had available for order. Below is a series of stills of what turned into a late day dance troupe recital that involved several designers. Too much time spent cooped up in a hotel! Hilarious!

Exworth & Sons

Yesterday I got a nice email from the designer of Exworth & Sons, a fashion line designed and manufactured in Toronto. They used some MoonRox pieces in their photo shoots for Spring/Summer 09 as well as in Fall 09. Shown with the Leopard Pencil Pleated Dress is the Starry Necklace! Currently their website showcases the S/S 09 line, but Fall will be added soon. I'm looking forward to seeing the new season's collection! Check it out here!

Here is a photo of the Starry Necklace up close! It's a show stopper!

If you'd like to shine in one yourself, send an email my way at info[at]moonrox[dot]ca.

One day left at the Mode Show

Tomorrow (August 11th) is the last day of the Fall/Winter Edition of the Mode Accessories Show. So far the Show has not been bad. I've picked up some new accounts which is exciting, and got a few re-orders from some. I'll tell you more about the new locations in the weeks ahead!

Send all the nice store owners that you know to the MoonRox BOOTH at 2208A at the Mode Show for our last day! It's a tiny booth as you can see, but it is rammed with goodies!

Lots of other Canadian designers are showing their work near the MoonRox booth. Here are a couple hilarious shots of Ange of Barbie's Basement Jewellery parading around decked in MoonRox (and a BBJ brooch) in the style of the show models that march the aisles holding a sign with the exhibitor's name and booth number covered head-to-toe in the vendor's wares. Our whole room of exhibitors howled!

I like...

I am really amazed by these chandeliers and other lighting fixtures by British Columbia based ReDesign Technologies. They are meticulously made with an item that we might see every day and give little thought to. I love that the simple wire paperclip has been given such importance and has become so beautiful! Check out more here.

Busy day after the long weekend

I spent the day organizing and getting more supplies to finish up the samples in preparation for the Mode Accessories Show coming up on the weekend. I had to make up for the time spent enjoying the long-awaited sun on this past long weekend. It seemed the Summer had finally graced us. I enjoyed a lovely Sangria Saturday with J. and A. and generally a nice weekend... Then it rained today! Good day for errands!
We all took turns taking ridiculous pictures with A.'s parasol. I'll save the ridiculous ones...

Sangria Recipe (It's good! I promise!)

- 1 bottle red or white wine
- 3/4 cup orange juice (Here, we like to substitute the brightest orange cocktail possible. Good options are Tampico, Fruite or Sunny Delight! Yes, really!)
- 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/2 cup dissolved sugar/simple syrup
- 1 fresh orange, sliced
- 1 fresh peach, diced
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
- 1 fresh apple, diced

Pour all ingredients into a pitcher full of ice and enjoy!

Look at this cute planter that someone has constructed from the layers of posters on this street post. There were tonnes of posters plastered to the post as they just piled up during the CUPE strike which has happily come to an end. Anyhow, I've seen a few of these "planter boxes" at Queen and Spadina. Nice idea!
